Aicom’s Janshin Densetsu – Quest of Jongmaster presents an unusual blend of tabletop gameplay and RPG elements, released in 1994 for SNK's Neo-Geo MVS hardware. Players control a character navigating a world map, encountering enemies that initiate mahjong matches. These battles form the core of the game, requiring players to strategically arrange tiles according to mahjong rules to defeat opponents. Before each encounter, spells can be selected using stored energy points to influence the match's outcome. The gameplay loop involves traversing the overworld, triggering encounters, and then engaging in a series of mahjong rounds. Players utilize a standard Neo-Geo joystick for control during these matches, a departure from traditional mahjong control panels. Successfully defeating enemies rewards the player, while defeat results in a transformation for both the character and vanquisher. While sharing significant similarities with the earlier Mahjong Quest, Janshin Densetsu offers a unique experience within the arcade landscape, integrating RPG progression mechanics into the familiar framework of tabletop mahjong. Versions for Neo-Geo CD and NEC PC Engine Arcade CD were released in 1995.
