Gameplay

Control a rebellious robot in Atari’s I, Robot, a distinctive 1983 shooter set within a stark world of colored blocks and oppressive surveillance. As Unhappy Interface Robot #1984, your mission is to dismantle the control systems of "Big Brother" by changing the color of designated zones from red to blue – a process that alters with each stage. Movement involves carefully timed jumps, as Big Brother’s watchful “Evil Eye” scans the environment and instantly destroys robots caught in mid-air. Gameplay progresses through 126 stages, each featuring unique platform layouts, obstacles like moving columns, and enemies ranging from birds to flying sharks. Interspersed within these levels are "Space Wave" sequences where you navigate polygonal objects while facing off against Big Brother himself, a giant head that relentlessly fires projectiles. Between levels, players can also opt for “Doodle City,” a brief diversion allowing them to create drawings using the game’s 3D graphics - though extended use will cost lives. I, Robot distinguishes itself through its early adoption of filled-polygon graphics and adjustable camera angles controlled by side buttons, offering new perspectives on the action and impacting gameplay difficulty based on visibility. A unique “Hall Effect” joystick was originally used to control movement, a technology not widely adopted in later arcade games.
