IPM Invader (M10, set 1)
IPM • 1979

IPM Invader arrived in arcades in early 1979 as a straightforward shooter experience for two players. The gameplay closely mirrors that of Space Invaders; players use two-way joysticks and single buttons to maneuver a laser cannon and defend against descending rows of alien invaders. Destroying the aliens earns points, with larger invaders awarding more than smaller ones. A unique twist appears after every third wave: a "coffee break" intermission briefly pauses the action. Beyond its familiar core mechanics, IPM Invader introduces an optional challenge through adjustable dip switches. When activated, this advanced setting adds UFOs that drop “capsules” across the screen. These capsules must be avoided until they hatch into new invaders, disrupting established defensive strategies and increasing the difficulty. Scoring ranges from 10 to 300 points depending on the type of enemy defeated. Developed by IPM Corp., later renamed Irem, this game demonstrated an early foray into arcade development for a company initially focused on renting out electronic entertainment equipment. Though built in the shadow of Space Invaders' popularity, it provided a stepping stone toward more innovative games to come from the studio.
