Gameplay

Published in 1979 by Sega, Invinco / Deep Scan is a unique multi-game experience for solo players. The first game, Invinco, takes clear inspiration from Space Invaders, but introduces varied alien behaviors to challenge the player. Rows of enemies appear with distinct patterns – some blinking in and out of view, others rolling across the screen, and still others requiring multiple hits to destroy. Special aliens also pose a threat, transforming into bombs that can damage the player’s defenses. The second game, Deep Scan, shifts gears entirely, presenting a submarine hunting scenario. Players control their submersible using a two-way joystick and three buttons, maneuvering through the depths in pursuit of targets. The gameplay combines these two distinct experiences within one cabinet, offering players contrasting challenges and styles of action. Powered by a Zilog Z80 processor, Invinco / Deep Scan provides a glimpse into early arcade game design, blending familiar shoot-'em-up mechanics with novel enemy designs and an entirely different submarine hunting subgame.
