Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (set 1)
Atari Games • 1985

Step into the perilous world of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, an action-packed maze fighter released in 1985 by Atari Games. As the famed archaeologist, you must navigate a series of treacherous environments inspired by the film – from claustrophobic mine shafts to a frantic mine cart chase, culminating in a desperate escape through a booby-trapped temple. Your arsenal is limited to Indiana’s signature whip, which you'll use to fend off Thuggee guards, snakes, and even fiery attacks from the villainous Mola Ram while rescuing kidnapped children and retrieving sacred Sankara Stones. The game unfolds across three distinct zones that repeat with increasing difficulty as you pursue your mission. Each zone presents unique challenges: in the mines, you’ll free captives; during the chase sequence, quick reflexes are key to staying ahead of pursuing carts; and within the temple itself, precise whip work is essential for avoiding danger and securing the relics. Successfully collecting all three Sankara Stones leads to a final confrontation and escape – though those playing on the easiest difficulty will experience a slightly altered ending. Running on Atari System 1 hardware, this arcade title was notable as one of the first from Atari to utilize speech capability to enhance player immersion. The game’s sound effects and music are drawn directly from the film soundtrack, adding authenticity to the perilous journey through the Temple of Doom.
