Step into feudal Japan in Ikki, a unique maze and fighting game for two players. As Gonbe or Tago, you lead an uprising against a tyrannical overlord, navigating vibrant levels inspired by Japanese folklore and customs. Combat is unconventional; your sickle weapon automatically targets the nearest enemy, shifting the focus to skillful maneuvering and evasion rather than direct attacks. The gameplay revolves around collecting eight gold coins scattered throughout each level, or capturing a randomly appearing feudal lord to complete it. A map on the right side of the screen displays coin locations, requiring strategic planning to overcome obstacles and avoid patrolling enemies like ninjas, samurai, and ghostly figures. Special items offer temporary advantages, such as increased speed, while bonus stages add variety to the experience. Ikki's distinctive mechanics blend maze navigation with a reactive combat system, offering a refreshing take on the top-down action genre. The game was originally released in Japan in 1985 and later ported to various platforms including Nintendo Famicom and PlayStation 4.
