Hunchback (set 1)
Century Electronics • 1983

Step into the role of Quasimodo in Century Electronics’ Hunchback, a challenging platform game released in 1983. Players must guide the bell-ringer through perilous castle walls, leaping across gaps and avoiding fiery chasms to rescue Esmeralda from her tower prison. Hazards abound – guards with spears, projectiles fired from both sides of the screen, and constantly swinging ropes demand precise timing and quick reflexes. A relentless guard pursues Quasimodo up each wall; complete a section quickly by ringing the bell before he reaches the top for bonus points. Successfully navigating multiple screens awards players a “Super Bonus,” but failure means a swift descent and loss of a life. The game’s visual display shows Quasi's progress toward Esmeralda, and upon reaching her, players face a rope-swinging challenge to secure the rescue. Hunchback is designed for two players using an eight-way joystick and button controls. After completing the initial sequence, the game resets with increased difficulty and tighter time constraints, presenting a constant test of skill and coordination.
