Gameplay

Taisen Hot Gimmick is an unusual tabletop game released in 1997 by Psikyo that blends mahjong gameplay with a distinctive visual style and mature content. Two players compete against eight opponents, each possessing unique characteristics and personalities. The core mechanic involves traditional mahjong rules; winning rounds depletes your opponent’s funds until they are defeated. Upon defeating an opponent, or after using a continue, the player is presented with a choice to view a brief animated sequence – a “punishment” – specific to that character. These sequences involve repeated button presses to advance and reveal further imagery. Players can also acquire special items between matches to gain advantages against subsequent opponents. The game concludes when one player exhausts their betting funds, marking the end of the competition. Hidden challenges exist within the game, allowing players to unlock additional characters by meeting specific conditions during gameplay; for example, avoiding punishments early on unlocks unique opponents from other Psikyo titles like Gunbird and Tengai.
