Gameplay

Horizon is a fast-paced horizontal scrolling shooter released in 1985 as a sequel to Irem’s Moon Patrol. Players assume control of a hover vehicle equipped with both a turret and cannon, navigating across varied terrain on three distinct lanes. The perspective shifts as the vehicle rolls between these lanes, presenting new challenges and enemy encounters. Two players can alternate turns to tackle the increasingly difficult levels, dodging obstacles and destroying enemies while managing fuel reserves. Gameplay involves strategically using both the turret’s short-range rockets and the cannon for ranged attacks. Certain sections feature destructible blocks that allow for shortcuts, though other hazards like indestructible ruins and pillars lead to immediate loss of a life. Careful observation is key; an audible warning signals approaching foes, and collisions or enemy fire send players back to a previous checkpoint, requiring them to repeat significant portions of the level. The game’s soundtrack dynamically changes based on the lane the hovercraft occupies, with more prominent drum beats when closer to the screen. While only one button is used for standard gameplay—firing both the cannon and turret—service mode reveals a second, unused button that may have originally been intended to launch rockets from the vehicle's stationary turret.
