Hopping Mappy
Namco • 1986

In Hopping Mappy, players take control of the Micro Police mouse, Mappy, and navigate challenging levels using a unique pogo stick mechanic. The gameplay revolves around bouncing across a checkerboard-like environment to collect treasures while evading patrolling cats known as Meowkies. These feline adversaries move in predictable patterns – vertically, horizontally, or in a zigzag—requiring careful timing and strategic bounces to avoid capture. A special accelerator button allows Mappy to temporarily double his speed, but players must be wary of “Hurry Up” warnings as the cats will also increase their pace when activated. The game supports two players simultaneously, encouraging cooperative gameplay as you work together to gather all eight treasures in each round. Bonus stages introduce a new objective: collecting as many balloons as possible within the level’s confines. While movement is restricted to the center points of those checkerboard squares, mastering Mappy's bouncing ability and exploiting the cats’ patterns is key to success. Hopping Mappy, released by Namco in 1986, offers a fresh twist on the classic Mappy formula with its distinctive platforming style and charming visual presentation. The game runs on Namco System 86 hardware and presents a vibrant palette of colors within a horizontal screen format.
