Hoccer is a two-player hockey game released in 1983 by Eastern Micro Electronics. Players control a single skater, Andrew, tasked with navigating a vertical playing field and scoring against an automated opponent. The challenge comes from two robotic adversaries, Ord and Clee, whose primary objective is to impede the player’s progress through aggressive maneuvers like ramming and strategically positioning themselves. Points are awarded for various actions in Hoccer, including hitting the goal to temporarily freeze the robots, striking targets along the sides of the arena, or even knocking the robotic opponents against the walls. A unique scoring opportunity arises when a spinner is activated; hitting side targets after spinning it yields progressively higher point values up to 1,000 points. Successfully targeting all side targets grants an extra player. Controlling Andrew requires precision using a four-way joystick and a single button, demanding strategic gameplay and quick reflexes to overcome the robotic opposition and achieve a high score. The game’s vibrant palette of 256 colors adds visual appeal to the fast-paced action unfolding on the vertical screen.
