Hit the Ice (US)
Taito Corporation (Williams license) • 1990

Step onto the ice for intense four-player hockey action in Hit the Ice. Representing the rival Reds and Blues of the Video Hockey League, players control their skaters to pass the puck around the rink and score on the opposing team’s goalie. The gameplay adheres to standard hockey rules, but with a distinctly arcade twist—don't be afraid to check your opponents! Each character possesses unique, impactful ways to knock down rivals, and spontaneous player fights can erupt at any moment. Adding another layer of strategy is the option to purchase a “power drink” before each period, temporarily boosting skating speed and shot power for a minute. This provides opportunities for quick bursts of offense or crucial defensive plays. The game's technical foundation utilizes Taito’s B System hardware, delivering vibrant visuals and energetic sound effects characteristic of early 1990s arcade experiences. Originally released in December 1990 under license from Williams Electronics Games, Hit the Ice found its way into popular culture when a unit appeared in the film Terminator 2: Judgment Day. While not widely distributed in Japan due to limited interest in ice hockey there, it was ported to several home consoles including the Sega Mega Drive and NEC PC-Engine.
