Nintendo’s SF-HiSplitter is a two-player shooter that puts a unique spin on the classic arcade formula established by games like Space Invaders. Rows of alien spacecraft slowly advance across the screen, moving back and forth before dropping down to the next level. Players use joysticks to aim and fire at the descending aliens, attempting to destroy them before they reach the bottom of the screen where defensive blocks absorb enemy projectiles. Hitting an alien in the center yields a higher score than hitting it on the side; a side hit splits the alien into two smaller targets, requiring more shots to eliminate. The game offers three distinct gameplay modes affecting how the aliens move and behave. One mode mimics the original Space Invaders, while others introduce variations like alternating rows or aliens appearing in a single line that expand with each pass. Periodically, a UFO will appear at the top of the screen offering bonus points and potentially spawning smaller alien targets. As players progress, the enemy fire rate increases, demanding increasingly precise aiming and strategic block management. Designed with contributions from Shigeru Miyamoto, SF-HiSplitter is part of Nintendo’s early foray into arcade game development, following their initial release of Space Fever. It provides a challenging and engaging experience for two players seeking a twist on the familiar alien-shooting gameplay of the late 1970s.
