Hexa
D.R. Korea • 1990

Hexa presents players with a single-player puzzle challenge reminiscent of Sega’s Columns. The game involves manipulating falling blocks composed of hexagonal shapes, rotating them and positioning them to create complete horizontal lines across the playfield. Successfully clearing lines advances the player while incomplete rows descend, creating an increasingly challenging environment as the game progresses. Released in 1990 by a South Korean manufacturer, Hexa utilizes a Zilog Z80 processor for its gameplay and a General Instrument AY8910 chip for sound effects and music. The graphics are displayed horizontally with a resolution of 256 x 224 pixels, using a palette of 256 colors to depict background imagery including dinosaur figures. The game’s soundtrack draws directly from the music found in Konami's Treasure of USAS, while the backdrop visuals originate from a graphics editor program released for MSX computers. Players control the falling pieces with a four-way joystick and utilize two buttons to manipulate the blocks within the gameplay area.
