Hellfire is a cooperative horizontal scrolling shooter released in arcades in 1989 by Toaplan, under license from Taito. Players take control of two fighter jets and work together to navigate through increasingly challenging levels filled with enemy aircraft and fortifications. A key feature of the game allows players to select their firing direction, adding a layer of tactical depth as they fend off waves of adversaries. The gameplay involves constant movement and precise shooting, requiring coordination between both pilots to survive. A soundtrack composed by Tatsuya Uemura accompanies the action. The original Japanese release was initially known as “Captain Lancer.” Hellfire supports two players simultaneously using an eight-way joystick and button controls. A limited edition soundtrack album was released shortly after the game’s debut, showcasing its distinctive sound design.
