Gameplay

Konami’s Haunted Castle, released in 1988, presents a unique blend of side-scrolling platforming and fighting action for up to two players simultaneously. Players navigate through a series of interconnected castle stages, battling hordes of creatures and facing off against powerful sub-bosses. The game's structure differs from traditional Castlevania titles, featuring a non-linear progression where the order of certain areas can be chosen, offering some player agency in their route through Dracula’s domain. As one of several characters, players wield whips and other weapons to dispatch enemies while dodging traps and projectiles. Distinct fighting sequences interrupt the platforming gameplay; these encounters pit players against formidable opponents requiring strategic attacks and defensive maneuvers. The game builds upon earlier entries in the Castlevania series, but provides a notably different experience with its scrolling fighter elements. This version, designated "M," is an export release. Those interested in exploring the original Japanese iteration of this title should consult the entry for Akumajou Dracula [Model GX768]. A port of Haunted Castle later became available on PlayStation 4 through the Arcade Archives series.
