Gameplay

Hat Trick is a two-player hockey game released in 1984 by Bally/Sente. Players control teams of two skaters each in an overhead perspective, maneuvering across the ice to score goals against their opponent. Using an eight-way joystick and single button, players direct their skaters, attempting shots while also defending their own net. The gameplay is straightforward, focusing on quick reflexes and strategic positioning for successful passes and scoring opportunities. Visually distinct features of Hat Trick include detailed player graphics and a unique Zamboni that periodically clears the ice after each game. Built using Bally/Sente's SAC-I hardware, the arcade cabinet delivers crisp visuals with a wide color palette and a smooth screen refresh rate. The sound design incorporates synthesized music and effects to enhance the on-ice action and create an engaging sporting atmosphere. Though simple in its core mechanics, Hat Trick offered enjoyable hockey gameplay for two players during the early 1980s arcade era and was later ported to home systems such as the Atari 7800 and Commodore C64. A prototype version for Nintendo’s NES console was also developed but never released.
