Hard Hat
Exidy • 1982

In Hard Hat, released by Exidy in 1982, players control a carpenter navigating a maze constructed from scaffolding. The game presents a single-player experience where you are pursued through this grid by animated hammers and whirling winds. Movement is achieved using a four-way joystick to reposition the character across the scaffold structure. A core gameplay element involves manipulating sections of the scaffolding itself; doing so allows players to shift letters within the maze. Successfully arranging these letters spells out "EXIDY" and "HARD HAT," revealing progress and likely unlocking further challenges. The game’s technical design shares similarities with Exidy's Pepper II, utilizing MOS Technology processors alongside custom sound chips for audio. Designed by Larry Hutcherson, Hard Hat is presented on a horizontal screen with a resolution of 248 x 256 pixels and uses a palette of eight colors to create its visual style. The game’s unique premise—combining maze navigation with letter manipulation—marked an early attempt at integrating educational elements into coin-operated arcade games.
