Gyruss
Konami • 1983

Gyruss challenges players to navigate a perilous journey through our solar system and beyond, battling waves of alien invaders in this frantic 1983 shooter. Controlling a ship that rotates around the screen’s perimeter, players fire inward at approaching enemies, dodging asteroids while progressing from Neptune towards Earth. Each planet reached presents a “Chance Stage” bonus where rapid-fire destruction earns extra points, and after confronting Earth, the game loops back with increased difficulty. The gameplay draws inspiration from titles like Tempest in its rotating ship mechanic, combined with elements reminiscent of Galaga's enemy designs. Two players can alternate taking on this cosmic challenge using an eight-way joystick for precise maneuvering. A memorable feature is the soundtrack's synthesized rendition of Bach’s “Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor,” adding to the game’s intensity. Strategic gameplay involves learning attack patterns, prioritizing targets like a formation of enemies followed by a sun-like enemy surrounded by pods to achieve double fire, and mastering ship placement to avoid incoming projectiles.
