Guzzler
Tehkan • 1983

In Guzzler, released in 1983 by Tehkan, two players navigate maze-like environments to extinguish fires that spawn throughout each level. Players control a unique character who battles enemies by launching bursts of liquid—a gameplay mechanic visually represented as the hero’s sprite gradually emptying and transforming with each attack. Movement speed increases as the character depletes their fluid reserves, ultimately becoming a swift but vulnerable outline. To replenish their supply, players must "guzzle" puddles scattered within the maze, occasionally encountering special alcoholic beverages that instantly refill liquid and temporarily freeze the fiery hazards. The game's unusual premise features an unconventional hero—a figure portrayed as something of a family disappointment—adding a quirky element to the action. Successfully extinguishing all fires completes a level and awards bonus points. Scoring is based on clearing fireballs and flames, with additional bonuses available for completing rounds while activating illuminated letters at the bottom of the screen by striking specific targets during highlighted moments. Guzzler offers a distinctive blend of maze navigation and combat, presenting a challenging experience for two players simultaneously.
