Gun Fight (set 1)
Dave Nutting Associates / Midway • 1975

Two players face off in Gun Fight, a 1975 shooter that marked an early step toward modern fighting games. Each player controls a gunfighter on their side of the screen using a joystick for movement and a tilting grip to aim. The objective is simple: shoot your opponent, who will then fall and acknowledge defeat before respawning. Obstacles like cacti, stagecoaches, and trees obstruct the line of sight, adding a layer of challenge to each encounter. Gameplay is continuous and time-based; matches typically last for 90 seconds, though operators can adjust this duration. Unlike later arcade games, Gun Fight does not feature a life system – it’s purely about racking up points through skillful shooting. The game's control scheme, separating movement from aiming, was an innovative approach that would influence future titles. The upright cabinet features a red exterior adorned with painted cowboy-themed side art; the game title is printed directly on the monitor bezel rather than on a marquee. Gun Fight holds a place in arcade history as the first American release based on a Japanese video game and, importantly, the first to utilize an Intel 8080 microprocessor, paving the way for more complex graphics and gameplay.
