Gulf Storm (set 1)
Dooyong • 1991

Gulf Storm is a two-player vertical scrolling shooter released in 1991 by Korean company Dooyong. Players control ships maneuvering upwards through increasingly challenging levels filled with enemy formations and obstacles. Utilizing an eight-way joystick and two buttons for firing, the gameplay focuses on precise movement and rapid reactions to survive waves of adversaries. Originally conceived before the Gulf War conflict, the game’s theme was later adjusted to reflect that historical event. The technical specifications include Zilog Z80 processors managing both gameplay and sound, alongside Yamaha YM2203 chips for audio output. Gulf Storm proved successful commercially, leading Dooyong to establish partnerships with companies in the United States and Japan, marking a significant step as the first Korean video game company to export its products to those regions.
