Atari Games • 1992

Guardians of the ‘Hood puts players in control of street vigilantes battling encroaching gangs to reclaim their territory. This 1992 fighting game from Atari Games utilizes a distinctive 2.5D perspective, blending side-scrolling action with depth and visual flair reminiscent of earlier titles like Pit-Fighters. Up to three players can team up to spar against enemies, recruit skilled fighters to their posse, and ultimately confront powerful bosses in an effort to clean up the streets. The gameplay revolves around close-quarters combat utilizing a variety of martial arts moves. Players select from a roster of diverse characters, each with unique fighting styles and animations. Between rounds of street brawling, characters can train at a sparring gym for improved skills. The game’s environments range from gritty city locales to underground fight clubs, populated by an array of memorable character cameos. Built on Atari's G42 hardware, Guardians of the 'Hood delivers vibrant graphics and sound driven by Yamaha and OKI chips. Through its familiar fighting mechanics and visual style, it became widely regarded as an unofficial sequel to Atari’s earlier arcade hit, Pit-Fighters.
