Guitar Freaks Ver. 1.01 is a two-player rhythm game released by Konami in 1999 that puts players in the role of guitarists. The gameplay involves matching colored notes as they scroll up the screen by pressing corresponding buttons on a specialized guitar-shaped controller, and using a "pluck" action to complete sections of songs. Successfully hitting the notes fills in missing parts of the music, creating a dynamic performance experience. This installment is part of Konami's long-running Guitar Freaks series and utilizes the System 573 hardware. Hidden modes and gameplay variations can be accessed by entering specific button combinations at the game’s start screen; these include speed editions and a two-player battle mode. A limited edition soundtrack album accompanied the release, further expanding the musical experience for fans. Notably, a copy of Guitar Freaks Ver. 1.01 once belonged to Michael Jackson and was later sold as part of an official auction. The game’s continuing popularity is evidenced by its place as the first title in an extensive series that would span numerous iterations over the following decade.
