Gameplay

Navigate a series of interconnected solar systems in Gravitar, a challenging one-player shooter from Atari released in 1982. Players pilot a spaceship through distinct environments featuring home bases, alien planets, and massive gravitational centers represented as "death stars." The objective is to either complete missions on all four regular planets within a system or conquer the red alien planet – each presenting unique terrain and hazards like flying rammer ships and bunkers that fire projectiles. Gameplay involves skillful maneuvering using thrust, rotation, and firing controls while managing fuel reserves with a tractor beam. Successful completion of planetary challenges awards bonus points and advances players to progressively more difficult solar systems, introducing negative gravity and invisible landscapes. Each red alien planet requires navigating a spiral tunnel under a strict time limit, demanding precision piloting to avoid walls and destroy the reactor at its core. As players progress through the game’s levels—ranging from regular gravity to increasingly complex scenarios—alien ships become faster, bunkers fire more frequently, and rammer speeds increase, testing reflexes and strategic planning. The game concludes when all lives are exhausted or fuel is depleted.
