Gameplay

Namco’s Golly! Ghost!, released in Japan in 1991, is a two-player shooter utilizing light guns for aiming and firing. Players must defeat a set number of ghosts before time expires to succeed, earning tickets redeemable for prizes – this game functions as a video redemption title. A unique aspect of the cabinet design involves a miniature dollhouse integrated into the structure; controlled motors within this house subtly animate elements like doors and windows as the ghostly apparitions appear on screen. The ghosts are projected through an inverted image reflected onto a glass panel, a technological innovation that later influenced Namco’s light gun game development. While the ghosts seemingly defy physical boundaries by passing through walls, their appearances are choreographed through these mechanical movements in the dollhouse. Golly! Ghost! is followed by a sequel, Bubble Trouble: Golly! Ghost! 2. The game runs on Namco System 2 hardware and features a soundtrack released as part of Victor Entertainment’s "Namco Video Game Graffiti" series. Shane Van Gorden currently holds the world record score for this title at 327 points.
