Gameplay

Step into the arena in Gladiator, a two-player fighting game released in North America by Taito America Corporation in 1986. Originally developed in Japan as Ougon no Shiro, this side-scrolling action title pits players against waves of enemies in close-quarters combat. Choose between two warriors and battle your way through levels, utilizing punches, kicks, and special attacks to defeat opponents and progress. The gameplay revolves around strategically managing your armor; each layer removed by enemy strikes weakens a warrior's defenses. A unique detail found in earlier versions of the game—absent from the North American release—involved a more revealing visual consequence for defeated characters. Players compete head-to-head, striving to achieve the highest score and demonstrating their skill in this fast-paced fighter. Gladiator later reappeared as part of the Taito Legends compilation on various consoles and computers starting in 2005, allowing a new generation of players to experience its action. Stephan Gore holds the world record for the game with an impressive score exceeding 41 million points.
