Gigas (MC-8123, 317-5002)
Sega • 1986

Sega’s Gigas, released in 1986, offers a two-player twist on the classic ball and paddle gameplay familiar from games like Breakout. Players maneuver paddles along the bottom of the screen to deflect a ball upward, breaking blocks arranged at the top. The objective is to clear all the formations while avoiding losing the ball off-screen. A sequence of three related titles, Gigas, Gigas Mark II, and Gigas Mark 3, were released around this time. The game utilizes dials for player control, allowing precise adjustments as players attempt to maintain a steady volley against the increasingly complex block patterns. Four Texas Instruments SN76496 sound chips provide audio feedback during gameplay. A similar-looking bootleg version of Gigas exists and is known as “Oigas”. Powered by a Zilog Z80 processor, Gigas provides a straightforward yet engaging arcade experience for up to two players seeking a competitive challenge in this familiar genre.
