Gain Ground is a 1988 shooter from Sega designed for up to three players. This unique game blends elements of walking simulators and top-down shooters as you navigate single-screen levels filled with enemies and trapped soldiers. The objective is to rescue these lost troops before time runs out; each rescued soldier will join your team, adding extra firepower to your arsenal. Players can select from three distinct characters, each possessing unique weapons and abilities—influences of the popular film RoboCop are visible in one character’s design and a later boss encounter. Levels vary greatly, taking players through diverse environments like fields, forests, castles, and fortified areas. The Sega System 24 hardware provides a crisp visual experience for this action-packed cooperative gameplay. The game's challenge lies not only in defeating the enemies but also managing time effectively to ensure all stranded soldiers are brought to safety. Though originally released in Japan, Gain Ground later found its way onto various home consoles including the Sega Master System, Mega Drive/Genesis, and PC Engine.
