Gameplay

In Green Beret, two players take on the role of US Special Forces operatives during the Cold War, tasked with infiltrating a heavily guarded Russian military base to rescue prisoners of war. This side-scrolling action game combines platforming elements with intense shooting sequences as you navigate missile bases, harbors, airfields, and finally, a Siberian POW camp. Beginning armed only with a combat knife, players can acquire powerful weapons like flamethrowers, RPGs, and grenades by defeating specific enemies scattered throughout the levels. Careful maneuvering is essential for survival; players must jump, crouch, and utilize ladders to avoid enemy fire and strategically placed landmines. A constant sense of urgency permeates the gameplay, as a timer forces you forward while increasingly challenging enemies – including Gyro-copters and flamethrower operators – appear. Successfully rescuing all four prisoners triggers a replay with heightened difficulty, ensuring an ongoing challenge for skilled players.
