Based on Sega’s popular fantasy action series, Golden Axe - The Duel is a two-player fighting game released in 1994. Players choose from familiar characters like Axel, Tyrius, and Gilius to battle head-to-head across varied arenas inspired by the original games. Combat utilizes an eight-way joystick for movement and six attack buttons—covering weak, medium, and strong attacks alongside a range of kicks—allowing for diverse offensive strategies and combos. The game runs on Sega’s ST-V hardware platform and provides a focused fighting experience distinct from the series' traditional beat-'em-up format. While bearing a 1994 copyright date, Golden Axe - The Duel was first available in public arcades beginning in January 1995. A limited soundtrack album featuring music from across the Golden Axe franchise was released years later by Wave Master. A port of this arcade title appeared on the Sega Saturn console in several regions throughout 1995. Programmers, graphic designers, a composer, and voice actors contributed to this installment, continuing the established traditions of the Golden Axe series.
