Ganryu / Musashi Ganryuki
Visco • 1999

Visco’s Ganryu, also known as Musashi Ganryuki, is a fast-paced platform fighter released in 1999 for Neo-Geo arcade systems. Players control either Musashi or Suzume, each with distinct combat styles and attributes, battling through stages inspired by Japanese folklore. The gameplay blends scrolling platforming action with fighting game mechanics; players utilize sword attacks, jumps, and chain combos to overcome a variety of enemies and ultimately confront the resurrected Sasaki Ganryu Kojiro. The narrative draws from a historical event: Musashi’s famed duel against Sasaki Kojiro, where Musashi employed an oversized wooden sword fashioned from a boat oar. This encounter serves as the backdrop for the game's story, with Kojiro returning from beyond to challenge Musashi once more. The arcade version utilizes Neo-Geo MVS hardware and supports two players, each controlling their character using a standard joystick and four buttons – three of which are utilized for attacks, jumps, and unique chain abilities. Ganryu features distinct characters with varied strengths; Musashi excels in power and vitality, while Suzume boasts superior dexterity. The game provides an action-packed experience centered around skilled swordplay and strategic maneuvering against a formidable foe.
