Gals Panic (unprotected, ver. 2.0)
Kaneko • 1990

Kaneko’s Gals Panic challenges players to reveal hidden images within a time limit in this unique puzzle game released in 1990. Two players work cooperatively to trace lines and clear areas of the screen, aiming to unveil eighty percent of a silhouetted female figure. However, a dynamic meter at the top adds an element of risk; as you progress, the pointer on this bar can shift towards a monstrous image, forcing a round restart if it descends too far. Successfully clearing a round resets the meter and moves it back toward the girl's depiction. Each completed round is followed by a roulette spin that introduces unpredictable rewards or penalties for the next attempt, adding an element of chance to the gameplay. A distinct progression system rewards players as they succeed; after three consecutive victories against a particular figure, her silhouette transforms into a photographic portrait. Gals Panic utilizes a vertical screen and simple controls – a four-way joystick and single button – to create a compelling cooperative experience. Later versions distributed by Taito and Inter Trading included enhanced visuals such as zoom effects and additional screens.
