Gameplay

Galaga '88 is a two-player shooter released in 1987 by Namco and distributed in North America by Atari. This iteration builds upon the classic Galaga formula, challenging players to defend against waves of insectoid aliens. Players pilot starfighters, maneuvering through space to destroy enemy formations while collecting power-ups that enhance their firepower and defensive capabilities. The gameplay involves strategic shooting and precise dodging as increasingly complex alien patterns descend upon the player's base. Successfully destroying enemies grants bonus points and opportunities for capturing Galaga bugs, which then join your forces to aid in the fight. Two players can simultaneously engage this challenge, adding a cooperative element to the frantic space combat. While developed in Japan, Atari brought this title to North American arcades with both dedicated cabinet and conversion kit options. Later ports have appeared on various platforms including the TurboGrafx-16, Xbox, GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, PC, iPad/iPhone, and within compilation titles like "Namco Museum."
