Final Star Force (US)
Tecmo • 1992

Final Star Force is a fast-paced, vertically scrolling shooter that serves as a sequel to Tecmo’s classic 1984 arcade hit, Star Force. Players pilot a spaceship through ten increasingly challenging stages, battling waves of enemy craft and formidable bosses while navigating detailed environments ranging from lunar landscapes to industrial complexes. Cooperative play allows for two players to join the fight simultaneously, each controlling their own ship with an eight-way joystick and firing button. A key feature of Final Star Force is its power-up system; collecting capsules grants access to different weapon configurations—Thunder Cannon, Wide Shot & Missile, or Spraygun & Synch-Fire—each offering distinct advantages in combat. Players can also utilize smart bombs for clearing the screen of enemies and strategically manage a limited number of bomb reserves. Careful attention to gameplay, such as prioritizing certain power-ups and utilizing ship positioning, is crucial for survival and achieving high scores. Beyond its intense action, Final Star Force includes unique features such as allowing players to enter their initials on the high score table and an automatic demo mode triggered by inactivity. A warning siren precedes each level, creating a sense of impending danger before the battle begins. Completing the game without letting any bosses escape unlocks a special ending message for skilled pilots.
