Konami’s The Final Round is a two-player boxing game released in 1988 that puts players head-to-head in the ring. Taking inspiration from its Japanese predecessor, Hard Puncher, this arcade title challenges players to master jabs, hooks, and uppercuts against a series of opponents with unique names like Jabbin' Jim and Gentleman Joe. Success depends on timing punches effectively while strategically dodging your opponent’s attacks; mastering training exercises also improves a boxer’s abilities. The game features several alterations from the original Japanese release, including changes to character names and voice samples now recorded in English. While certain visual Easter eggs and bonus content—such as a flock of birds appearing during matches or an alternate referee head—were omitted for the Western version, The Final Round still delivers a competitive boxing experience. Cabinet artwork was designed by Don Marshall. Players begin each match by selecting their fighter and can access different game modes through specific joystick inputs at the start screen. The gameplay focuses on delivering calculated blows to deplete your opponent's health bar while managing stamina and avoiding knockout punches.
