Taisen Mahjong Final Romance R (Japan)

Video System’s Taisen Mahjong Final Romance R is a two-player tabletop arcade game released in Japan in December 1995. The game continues the storyline of the Final Romance series, inviting players to compete head-to-head in matches of mahjong. Players utilize a dedicated keyboard to execute moves and strategize against their opponent within the framework of traditional Japanese mahjong rules. The game features multiple characters, each with distinct appearances and animations, progressing through different stages as gameplay unfolds. Taisen Mahjong Final Romance R builds on previous entries in the series, providing an extended play experience suitable for long sessions; a detail alluded to by promotional materials. The soundtrack is driven by Yamaha YM2610 sound chips alongside a Zilog Z80 processor. The game’s development team included character designer Gensho Sugiyama and script writer Yasunobu Hayashi, among others, with voice acting provided by Satomi Koroogi and Fumie Kusachi, amongst other actors. A port of the arcade title later appeared on Sega Saturn in 1996.
