Frisky Tom (set 1)
Nichibutsu • 1981

In Frisky Tom, two players cooperate to guide water from an upper tank to a lower one, navigating a maze of pipes fraught with peril. As plumber Frisky Tom, you must maneuver around mischievous mice who actively sabotage your efforts by stealing and destroying sections of the pipeline, and even nipping at your heels. Successfully filling the bottom tank triggers advancement to new levels, often punctuated by an interlude featuring a woman relaxing in a bathtub – a visual reward tied to the amount of water collected. This 1981 title from Nichibutsu features distinct gameplay mechanics that differentiate it from its predecessor. Lives are tracked as individual units rather than representing water tank capacity, and the lower tank gradually depletes if not replenished with water, leading to a loss of life. New strategies arise from being able to extinguish bomb fuses from either side of the playfield and the altered behavior of various mouse types, each presenting unique challenges in your quest to deliver that precious water supply. The game's development utilized custom processing units for the first time at Nichibutsu, marking a technical innovation for arcade games. While initially overlooked, Frisky Tom offered a novel blend of maze navigation and cooperative gameplay, making it a curious footnote in early arcade history.
