Gameplay

Trapped in an icy Arctic environment, players guide Manfred through a maze while attempting to escape. Armed with a flamethrower and a jetpack, the objective is to navigate the frozen landscape, avoiding hazards and collecting gems to replenish fuel for both devices. The game demands strategic resource management as the player balances offensive capabilities with mobility. Freeze presents a single-player experience controlled by a two-way joystick and two buttons, allowing players to maneuver Manfred through the maze while utilizing his flamethrower and jetpack. Designed and programmed by Bob Skinner and David Dentt in 1984, the game’s visuals were crafted by Dan Viescas. The name "Manfred" was chosen as a nod to the designer's fondness for Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The Cinematronics title utilizes Zilog Z80 processors and a General Instrument AY8910 sound chip to deliver its gameplay experience. Players must carefully plan their movements, recharging resources as needed, in order to successfully traverse the frozen environment and find a way out.
