Free Kick (NS6201-A 1987.10)
Nihon System (Merit license) • 1987

A soccer-themed twist on classic ball and paddle gameplay, Free Kick challenges players to break through formations of blocks using a digitally rendered projectile. Two players can compete simultaneously, each controlling a dial to adjust their paddle’s position as they attempt to clear the screen and score points against their opponent. The game utilizes Zilog Z80 processing power and Texas Instruments sound chips to deliver its experience. Players maneuver their paddles up and down, aiming to deflect the ball towards the opposing side and shatter the brickwork that obstructs their progress. Successfully clearing a level awards further play; failing to prevent the ball from passing your paddle results in lost lives. The simple controls of dials and buttons allow for straightforward competitive fun. Released in 1987 by Nihon System under license from Merit Industries, Free Kick provides an accessible and engaging experience rooted in familiar arcade mechanics with a sporty theme.
