Funky Fish
Sun Electronics • 1981

Players take on the role of a unique underwater protagonist in Funky Fish, a cooperative shooter released by Sun Electronics in 1981. The gameplay involves confronting schools of smaller fish that are protecting a larger, unseen monster. Players use bubbles to attack these defending fish; successfully hitting them transforms the fish into fruit. A key element of the game is managing the dropped fruit. If this fruit isn't collected by a player, it sinks to the seabed and triggers an unexpected consequence – awakening a seashell that releases a sea horse adversary. Two players can team up, each controlling their own character using an 8-way joystick and single button to navigate the vertical screen and fend off the aquatic threat. Funky Fish utilizes two Zilog Z80 processors and a General Instrument AY8910 sound chip to create its experience on a 240x256 pixel display, offering a vibrant visual style with a palette of 24 colors. Ports for the Emerson Arcadia and Atari 2600 followed the original arcade release.
