Fire One
Exidy • 1979

Engage in an underwater duel with Fire One, a two-player shooter released by Exidy in 1979. Players assume the role of submarine commanders, each controlling their vessel’s periscope view on a split screen display. The objective is to locate and destroy your opponent's submarine while evading incoming torpedoes. Careful planning is essential as reloading torpedo tubes takes time, demanding strategic targeting for maximum point gains against various enemy ships. Movement relies on precise paddle control of the periscope’s left-right rotation, allowing players to scan the depths. A submerge button provides a temporary defensive maneuver, concealing your submarine from view; however, remaining submerged prevents offensive action and leaves you vulnerable. The game presents a tense strategic challenge as each player balances attack and defense in this unique gallery shooter experience. Hidden within the game’s programming are playful messages left by the development team, discovered through ROM analysis: brief greetings and lighthearted instructions for colleagues. Fire One was initially released in the United States and later licensed to Sega for distribution in Japan.
