Firebeast (prototype)
Atari • 1983

Firebeast is a one-player platform and shooter game developed by Atari in 1983. Originally conceived as "Dragon Rider" drawing inspiration from the Chronicles of Pern, the project was renamed and ultimately remained an unreleased prototype due to licensing complications and gameplay testing results. As the player navigates through the game, they control a character who must traverse environments while engaging enemy forces with ranged attacks. The game utilizes a MOS Technology M6502 processor and two POKEY sound chips to deliver its audio-visual experience. A color palette of sixty-four hues provides visual distinction for the varied platforming and shooting action. Ed Rotberg is credited as both designer and programmer of this cancelled title, which showcases an early example of Atari’s experimentation within the platform shooter genre. Though never formally released to arcades, Firebeast represents a glimpse into the creative process behind classic game development, illustrating how ambitious ideas can evolve—or cease to exist—during production.
