Fighting Layer (Asia, FTL3/VER.A)
Arika / Namco • 1998

Fighting Layer is a two-player versus fighting game released in Japan by Arika and Namco in 1998. Players select from a diverse cast of characters to engage in one-on-one battles rendered with three-dimensional graphics. Each character possesses unique special moves and abilities, allowing for varied strategies and approaches to combat as players utilize an eight-way joystick and six buttons to control their fighter’s movements and attacks. Developed by a team including former Capcom employees, Fighting Layer features recognizable figures from the fighting game scene—Allen Snider and Blair Dame also appear in Arika's Street Fighter EX Plus. The gameplay emphasizes strategic positioning and precise timing as players attempt to outmaneuver and defeat their opponent through a series of strikes, throws, and powerful super moves. Two distinct versions exist: FTL0 and FTL3. While both offer the core fighting experience, FTL3 incorporates alterations such as modified visual effects and removed special attacks, originally intended for a broader international release that ultimately did not occur. These changes impact character balance and tournament viability.
