Exciting Soccer
Alpha Denshi Co. • 1983

Step onto the pitch in Exciting Soccer, a two-player sports game released by Alpha Denshi in 1983. Choose from six national teams – Italy, England, Brazil, West Germany, Austria, and France – and compete for victory in this overhead perspective soccer simulation. Players control their chosen team using an eight-way joystick to tackle opponents, execute short or long passes, and take shots on goal. Matches can end in a penalty shootout if tied, adding extra tension to the competition. As you progress through the game, opponents become increasingly challenging. The experience incorporates elements like corner kicks, throw-ins, and digitized voices, all demonstrating an attempt at realism for its time. A unique soundtrack utilizes music inspired by instrumental rock and roll tunes such as “Tequila”. A bootleg version released in 1984 replaced the Italian team with a Japanese squad, featured altered music, and included credits on the title screen acknowledging "planned by Shinzi" and "programmed by Kazutomi." Exciting Soccer was followed by a sequel, Exciting Soccer II, in 1985.
