Gameplay

Tecmo’s Eight Forces, released in 1994, is a two-player vertical scrolling shooter challenging players to navigate through increasingly difficult environments. As pilots of advanced spacecraft, you ascend through distinct zones—each representing one of the “eight forces”— battling waves of enemy fighters and imposing structures while dodging projectiles. Players control their ships with an eight-way joystick, utilizing buttons for firing standard weaponry and deploying powerful bombs to clear the screen. The game’s visual presentation utilizes a vertical display with a resolution of 384x224 pixels and a color palette of over fifteen hundred hues. The Seta 1st Generation hardware powers this experience, driven by a Motorola 68000 processor and X1-010 sound chip. Cooperative play allows two players to tackle the challenges together, coordinating attacks and supporting each other against overwhelming odds. Eight Forces features programming contributions from Mitsugu and Morizo, alongside design work from Kibandoo Jun and others. The soundtrack is composed by Hanaoka, Okuda, and Nakanisi, adding depth and intensity to the aerial combat sequences.
