E.D.F.: Earth Defense Force (set 1)
Jaleco • 1991

Earth Defense Force drops players into a desperate battle against waves of giant insectoid creatures threatening humanity. This cooperative horizontal shooter, released by Jaleco in 1991, allows two players to team up and defend Earth from an escalating alien invasion. Players control specialized vehicles, maneuvering across the screen while unleashing a variety of weaponry to destroy the monstrous hordes and their sprawling nests. Gameplay involves navigating through scrolling environments – forests, cities, and volcanic landscapes – each increasingly overrun by the insect menace. As defenders advance, they face progressively larger and more dangerous enemies requiring skillful dodging, precise shooting, and coordinated teamwork. The game’s soundtrack was even released on a limited edition album shortly after its debut. Earth Defense Force utilizes Jaleco's Mega System 1-B hardware to deliver fast-paced action powered by Motorola processors and sound chips from Yamaha and OKI. Originally designed for two players using an eight-way joystick and simple controls, it offered a challenging and engaging experience in the arcade environment.
