DownTown / Mokugeki (set 1)
Seta • 1989

Defend your city from waves of criminals in DownTown, also known as Mokugeki. This two-player arcade game, released in 1989 by Seta, blends fighting and vertical scrolling action. Players team up to battle through urban environments, facing off against a variety of enemies including imposing, unusually large opponents. The gameplay focuses on direct confrontation with these adversaries, utilizing an 8-way joystick for movement and two buttons for attack. The game presents an overhead perspective, allowing players to survey the unfolding conflict as they progress through the city streets. As you advance, your mission is to thwart the criminals’ plans and restore order. DownTown features music composed by Goblin Sound and sound effects created with the Natsu System, contributing to its distinct audiovisual style. Developed in Japan and later distributed in the United States under the name DownTown, this arcade title showcases a collaborative effort from designers like Team Tam Chan and programmers such as Kazuaki Nakanishi. The game’s visual design was spearheaded by Asako Kumura and Miyuki Kasajima, while Katsuji Nagai led the development of its PCM16 music system.
