Dokaben (Japan)
Capcom • 1989

Dokaben is a unique two-player sports game released in Japan by Capcom in 1989. Rather than traditional baseball gameplay, this title utilizes a card system to determine outcomes during matches. Players use an eight-way joystick to navigate and interact with the on-screen action, employing two buttons for specific commands related to card play. The core of the experience involves drawing cards that dictate player performance – batting success, fielding ability, and other baseball actions are all resolved through these randomly dealt cards. Based on a popular Japanese manga series, Dokaben presents a visual interpretation of the sport where strategy lies in managing your hand of cards and anticipating your opponent’s moves. The game features distinct sound chips, producing both audio cues for card draws and a soundtrack to accompany the baseball action. While superficially resembling a sports title, its unconventional mechanics establish it as a singular experience within Capcom's arcade catalog and the broader genre of Japanese video games. A sequel, Dokaben 2, followed this initial release.
