Gameplay

Take on the role of Junior in this 1982 Nintendo arcade game, a reversal of roles from the original Donkey Kong. Players control the little ape as he attempts to free his father from Mario’s clutches by climbing construction sites and navigating various themed stages. Gameplay involves running, jumping, and throwing fruit to defeat enemies and activate mechanisms that allow Junior to ascend to higher levels. Donkey Kong Junior features two-player simultaneous action, allowing for cooperative or competitive gameplay as you both strive for the highest score. The US version’s high score list is limited to three-letter names, a notable difference from the Japanese release and other regional versions. Unique stage arrangements also distinguish the American arcade experience, altering the order in which levels are presented. Following its initial release, Donkey Kong Junior spawned an animated television series produced by Ruby-Spears Productions and was subsequently ported to numerous home consoles and computers throughout North America, including the Colecovision, Atari 2600, and NES.
